What warranty comes with a new Toyota?

Any new Toyota will be equipped with a factory or bumper-to-bumper warranty to cover maintenance for a preset time period, usually 3 years. 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage

5-year/60,000-mile coverage for power components

Toyota’s limited powertrain warranty includes coverage for repairs and adjustments on main power components such as the engine, transmission, front-wheel-drive system, rear-wheel, and trans-axle.


5-year/60,000-mile coverage for restraint systems

The Restraint Systems Warranty includes coverage for faulty seat belts and airbag systems.


5-year/unlimited rust-through coverage

The Corrosion Perforation Warranty covers any perforation from rusting or corrosion on your Toyota. This coverage lasts for 5 years regardless of mileage.


Emission control coverage

Your vehicle is covered under Federal and California regulations that guarantee that it passes emission standards. The length of coverage will depend on the state your vehicle is registered in, so check your Toyota Warranty & Maintenance Guide for details. Terms range from two years/24,000 miles to eight years/80,000 miles.


Accessories coverage

Your new car will also come with the Toyota Accessory Warranty. It includes coverage for Genuine Toyota accessories that come with your car for 3 years/36,000 miles. Accessories purchased later are covered for 1 year/unlimited miles.


For 2020 Toyota Hybrid Vehicles 

The hybrid HV battery is covered for ten years from the original date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Its coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Refer to your Owner’s Warranty and Maintenance Guide for details. 

Does the Toyota warranty transfer to a new owner?

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty gets automatically transferred to the subsequent vehicle owners at no cost on the condition that the vehicle is sold during the warranty period. This is based on what is stated on Toyota’s website.

Is oil change covered under warranty Toyota?

Oil change is covered under ToyotaCare which is a 2-year/25,000 miles-no cost maintenance plan that you’ll get with the lease or purchase of your new Toyota vehicle. With this plan, all necessary scheduled maintenance will be performed by Toyota trained and certified technicians.


What is included in Toyota maintenance service?

Aside from oil changes, ToyotaCare also includes services such as towing, tire service, winching, lockout protection, emergency fuel delivery, maintenance reminders, multi-point inspection, battery jump-starts, filter change, fluid level inspection and adjustment, and tire rotation. Toyota will shoulder all these services when necessary according to its Maintenance guide.


You’ll also get 24-hour road assistance on your new Toyota under the plan. The ToyotaCare service is not extended beyond the initial two years. You will have to pay out of pocket for an oil change, fluid level adjustment, tire rotation or inspection after the plan expires. 

Can I go to any Toyota dealer for warranty service?

Yes, you can. Warranty services are available at any participating Toyota dealership in the continental United States and Alaska. You do not have to go to the same dealer where you purchased or leased your car from. 


Are brakes covered under Toyota warranty?

Despite being called bumper-to-bumper warranty, a factory warranty just like that of Toyota, has exceptions to their coverage. Normal “wear and tear” expenses such as brake pad issues, engine tune-ups, spark plug or fuse replacements, cosmetic problems, and wiper blade repairs are not covered under basic Toyota warranty.

A Toyota extended warranty is called Toyota Vehicle Service Agreements (VSA). It is still likely to cost at least $1,000, and it’s possible that a major repair won’t be needed every year. But you should also consider the fact that one expensive repair can also cost you a lot so the cost that comes with your Toyota VSA could be worth it.


Toyota Extended Warranties/ Toyota VSAs

Powertrain Protection

The Powertrain VSA is the basic extended warranty plan of Toyota. It’s available for new vehicles–those less than 3 years old and under 36,000 miles. Used Toyotas within the current plus 12 model years old and up to 150,000 miles are also eligible for this plan.


The plan’s coverage is 6 years and 100,000 miles. It includes coverage for any repairs or replacements of your car’s transmission, engine and other components. In case of major mechanical breakdowns, you will get reimbursement for car rentals at $35 per day, and if you are more than 150 miles from home for a maximum of 4 days, you will also get reimbursements for meals and lodging at 50 per day.


Gold Protection

If you want a more robust extended warranty coverage than the basic one, opt for this extended warranty plan. It has the same eligibility rules for new cars as the basic plan. Used cars within the current plus 9 model years old and up to 150,000 miles are also eligible. 


Gold Protection offers more flexible terms. You have the option to have extended warranty up to 8 years and 125,000 miles for new vehicles or 5 years and 60,000 miles for used vehicles. 


The plan has extensive coverage. It covers more than 100 more components than the basic plan. If a mechanical failure prevents you from using your Toyota, you’re also entitled to reimbursements for rental cars up to $35 per day and $50 per day for meals and lodging, if you are more than 150 miles from home (for a maximum of four days).  


Platinum Protection

This is Toyota’s highest level of service agreement protection. This is a strong option for the question of “Does Toyota cover maintenance after the purchase of a new vehicle?” you may have had. It comes with the same eligibility rules as the Gold Protection plan, but it can extend as long as 10 years and 125,000 miles for new cars. 


Almost all parts of your vehicles are included in the coverage, from the power seat computer to the brakes. You do not have to worry about submitting claims since Toyota will pay the authorized dealer directly.


If you have this premium plan, you also get higher reimbursements for rental cars at 50 per day, and meals and lodging at $100 per day (under the same conditions as previously mentioned in the other plans).

Should you buy the extra warranty on a new car?

Before you can arrive at an answer to this question, you’d need to ask yourself certain questions. First, ask yourself how long you are going to keep the car and how many miles you drive each year. The next thing to do is compare them to the powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranties included with the cars you are considering to purchase. 


For instance, if you typically keep your cars for about 3 years, and you’re looking at a 2020 Toyota Avalon with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 3-year/36,000-mile, then you should not buy extended coverage for it. But if you plan to keep your car for 8 years and it only comes with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty, then you should probably get an extended warranty coverage for peace of mind for the first couple of years after the expiration of your new car warranty.


Another thing you should consider is looking at the predicted reliability of the cars you are considering. If they score low in reliability, it’s a sign that you’ll most likely need an extended warranty. Cars with high scores are less likely to need expensive repairs. 


How much is a car extended warranty?

On average, an extended car warranty cost ranges from $350 to $700 per year. Keep in mind though that every person and policy is different. For a good quality package and after-sales service, the range would be higher at around $1,800. Toyota does not publish the cost of their extended warranty plans, but the estimated cost is between $1,000 and $1,500 when bought from the dealer.
