“The 5.0 DOHC engine that Ford builds today is a significant revision of the Coyote that rolled out about 10 years ago. Since that time a whole universe of change has come to pass in the world of autos and energy. Today where I live in the Southeastern US the retail price for unleaded regular gas is roughly half of what it was in 2008. What was then the rising price of gasoline pushed many of the decisions that consumers and automakers were addressing.
My own feeling with the benefit of clear hindsight is that the 5.0 is way overbuilt for use in pickups or most SUVs and sedans. It checks all the right boxes for a racing engine; however, it’s got way too many moving parts for a suitable SUV or truck engine. Its DOHC architecture is ideal for engine speeds ranging from 4000 to 7500 RPM, but most of our passenger cars and trucks rarely operate outside of the 1500 to 3500 RPM sweet spot.”

“An absolutely amazing well engineered, durable, engine. I have one, with over 70,000 miles, in my F150 and just love it. I have, on occasion, had to overload my truck, then hang an enclosed 1-ton trailer on the back, jump in and drive over a thousand miles, to my winter home in Florida.
