Inspecting a Car- What Do I Look For in A Vehicle?

Finding a vehicle free of trouble depends on you. It has nothing to do with luck or chance. It has everything to do with great investigative and research skills. As a vehicle buyer, it’s your job to examine your car of choice-or get the help you need- to inspect, evaluate possible choices for your driving needs. Check out the following advice, that can help you to avoid a bad car and make a great decision for a great set of wheels, when it’s all said and done.

Do Your Homework

No, your days of doing homework are not over when it comes to car buying! As a car buyer, it’s time to get busy doing your examinations and enquiries about the best car for you. In an effort to eliminate the risk of buying a trouble-filled car, you want to take the time to identify models that have great durability and reliability before you begin shopping.  You may also want to take a glance at reputable publications that offer durability and reliability-history graphs and charts too. Find out how different cars rate when it comes to the kind of driving that you will be doing. You don’t want to overwhelm yourself, but you want to be armed with the best information for your car purchase.

Read The Window Sticker

As you head out to look at cars, take the time to read the window stickers of the vehicles you are interested in. Here in the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission demands that car dealers post a Buyer’s Guide, for every car that’s for sale. Each dealer should have a window sticker that includes the following about each car ready for purchase:

  1. Whether your car of choice is being sold “as is” or with a warranty
  2. The percentage of repair costs if there are any and more.

You want as much protection you can get, from car problems. This is especially true for people who are buying pre-owned vehicles.

The Inspection Of The Car

Has a certain vehicle caught your eye? Did you find that SUV in the color you wanted and at the price you wanted? Then it’s time to get that car inspected. You can ask a mechanic to evaluate your vehicle of choice and allow him or her to tell you the “real deal” regarding that “perfect SUV” that you have your eye on. If your mechanic has some “red flags” they see about the car, then it’s time to move on.

The Exterior of Your Car

As you look for that perfect car, you want to make sure that you look at the exterior of the car with set of “unfiltered eyes”. This means you want to inspect the body of the car and look for irregularities, damage and other issues.

What does the body of the car look like? Has the body been painted over? Are there any areas of rust that you need to address with the dealer? Check the mirrors of the car. Are there any cracks or fractures? Look at your headlights and taillights. Do they work? The car dealer should have brand new bulbs in the light sockets. Check out that suspension of the car. Walk around the vehicle and see if it is at standing level. What happens when you bounce each corner up and down? Are the shock absorbers in great shape?  Your vehicle should rebound only once after you push it down. If it keeps moving, then you need to move on. Check those tires. Are they brand new? Is the tread thick on them? Any car dealer who wants to sell car should have a new set of tires- or at least great tires- on that car.

The Interior of Your Car

After you finish looking at the exterior of your car, it’s time to inspect the interior of the car. Begin with the body inside. What does it look like? Are there any rips, punctures or tears anywhere? What does the interior smell like? Did the car belong to a smoker? Are the pedals and the padding on those pedals worn, or do they look great? The pedal wear will give you an indication of the driving habits of the car. Check out that speedometer. How many miles are on the car? Is the mileage good for you? Will you be able to utilize the car for the next five, ten or 15 years, if that is your objective? Turn on the radio and check out the sound system. Do you have the bass you want? Be sure that you look up in your car’s interior too. Check out the roof of the car and see if it is in good shape too. If there are holes or tears in the roof, then you need to discuss this with your car dealer.

Under The Hood and Undercarriage

You also want to take time to look under the hood and the undercarriage of the car. Items you want to look at include:

  1. Hoses and belts
  2. Fluids
  3. Car Battery
  4. Radiator
  5. Tailpipe and more.

But there are great pre-owned sedans you can buy that you give you the features and amenities you desire.
