Now you are preparing to sell your car on your own property. Great! The first order of business you should take care of, is letting folks know you have a car to sell. There may be a friend of a friend who is looking for a car for his/her spouse, child or a family member.

You may wish to purchase some “for sale” signs and place the car either on a lot or somewhere that is approved by the state of Utah to sell your car.

You may wish to create a sheet that offers buyers the specifics about your car. For example, to prevent you from sounding like a broken record, copy some great looking flyers or sheets that have the mileage of the car, the year, make and model and other specifications about the car. If your used car has brand new tires on it, let potential buyers know!  If your car has a new transmission, let buyers know and reflect that in the price of the car!

Next, you will have to exercise patience in selling your car privately. You may not get a buyer for the car until days, weeks and even months down the road.

Preparing Your Car for Purchase

Preparing Your Car for Purchase

Since you have a car to sell, you want to make sure that you have a stellar car to sell to someone! Check out some common sense tips below that will help you to have a fast sell of your car!

  1. Car Wash & Car Detail. Take the time to carefully wash your car. You may even want to take the car to a detail shop. Make sure the wheels are shiny, there is a decent wax job and you have vacuumed the mats in the car. Don’t forget to take the time to wipe down and clean the interior of the car.
  2. Address Repairs. If your car needs some work on the paint, make sure you take care of that. Have a small dent in the fender? Try to get that fixed. If you have any aspect of your car that needs attention and a fix, you should take care of that before you sell it. Otherwise, you should note the blemishes to the buyer.
  3. Replacing Parts. Does the car need any new filters? Take the time to replace them. How about the car’s hoses? Could it stand some new ones? Replace those as well.

Remember, you are selling a car. Anything you are not able to address or fix, you should indicate such in the price and description of the car. Honesty is always indeed the best policy when selling a car. You want to be honest and straightforward with your buyer as he or she looks at your car. Just because your car needs some work doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to sell your car.

Lots of car buyers are mechanics and “fix-it” people, who love to repair a car.
