  • 2018 Jeep Renegade Engine problems: and installing and not starting

When you invest in a powerful, strong vehicle like the 2018 Jeep Renegade, you expect a very reliable vehicle that does not have any major problems especially doing the first part of its lifetime.

However, this was not the case with many customers. Unfortunately, the vehicle was reported to have major issues in the engine ranging from engine stalling to engine not starting at all.

Some customers indicated that their 2018 Jeep Renegade might experience excessive oil consumption, engine stalling, and complete acceleration loss.

Surprisingly, most reported engine complaints were associated with relatively newer vehicles at only 5000 miles.

Some of the engine problems associated with excessive oil consumption were resolved in some scenarios by replacing the piston rings or replacing the entire engine.

Customer complaints #1

I have owned this Jeep Renegade for three months and 4200 miles. Two days ago it stalled out on the three times. I called the dealerships service department because no engine light came on. They said there have been problems and to heck my oil. The dip stick was dry! It has already burned through 5+ quarts!! I have been driving with less than one quart of oil!!!! I am beyond shocked! Why did no low oil dash light come on? This is a major issue! I am reading other complaints, so it isn’t just mine! Now trying to go through the lemon law is going to be a real nightmare! Something needs to be done!”

Customer complaints #2

I had purchased a brand new 2018 jeep renegade trailhawk and before it had even reached the appropriate mileage to bring the vehicle in for its first standard service, i had discovered the engine was burning an excessive amount of oil. The vechile has stalled on me before while the car was in motion and whilst driving on busy highways. I have made multiple complaints with the dealership and made attempts to have the issue corrected (oil consumption test, replacing the pcv valve) and yet the issue still exists. Jeep staff members through the dealership along with members from jeep headquarters keep attempting to inform me “it’s normal, just keep putting oil in it..” I am not satisfied with this response. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. It is not only hazardous to myself as the driver, but also the public when the car does stall.”

  • 2018 Jeep Renegade Electrical system problems: Vehicle won't start to, faulty radio, and issues in heated seats!

The second top reported complaint about the 2018 Jeep Renegade has to do with the electrical system. Many people indicated that they've experienced some problems with the vehicle not starting a role that could be related to the vehicle's battery.

On the other hand, a group of people smelled some burning smell coming from the heated seats. Lastly, many complaints indicated some issues in the lights not working and not turning off in some scenarios.

Luckily, the old maker did not remain silent and issued a massive recall for many affected vehicles addressing some electrical problems.

The automaker indicated that there might be an issue with the faulty voltage regulator, which could cause the vehicle not to start or even install. We will discuss this recall in detail in the following sections.

Customer complaints #1

“Radio/Entertainment center does not power on with automobile – intermittently. After 2-3 minutes of driving the unit powers on. While it is off, all physical controls in the center console (volume, temperature adjustment, etc.) are non-responsive.”

Customer complaints #2

“I purchased my 2018 jeep renegade may 29, 2018 on december 9, 2018 in the early morning my vehicle caught fire. Luckily me and my two young sons were not in the vehicle when the fire ignited. The fire ended up smoldering from lack of oxygen because my windows and doors were shut an locked. I contacted the chrysler manufacture and an investigation is being done. The fireman that came said it looks like an electrical fire due to faulty wiring.”

  • 2018 Jeep Renegade Transmission problems: several issues!

Although the 2018 Jeep Renegade has high reported complaints about engine issues, it also had significant transmission problems. What's worse than that?

The two major components in your vehicle are suffering!

A good number of complaints indicated that the transmission might not work properly, and it might not engage in some scenarios.

Unfortunately, there wasn't any recall or even bulletin services discussing any issues associated with the 2018 Jeep Renegade transmission. There was only one manufacturer communication where the automaker briefly discussed transmission lights issues.

Customer complaints #1

My transmission has gone down TWICE, stalling my Renegade in the middle of heavy traffic. Total safety hazard! First time, 6 days after purchase with 108 miles on it. 2nd time with 210 miles on it. It’s been at the dealer more than I’ve had it”

Customer complaints #2

“purchased new on 3/19/19. On 3/25/19, with 108 miles on it, the transmission locked up while in motion, in traffic on a very busy highway. Was towed to dealer, who 8 days later said transmission module was faulty, replaced, returned to me 4/1/19. 4/6/19 same scenario repeated, however this time in a parking lot. Again towed to dealer. The first time an extremely frightening experience! I strongly suggest a recall!!”

  • 2018 Jeep Renegade Brake system problems: Vehicle rolling in reverse while braking!

Another major issue was reported about the 2018 Jeep Renegade, indicating some problems with the braking system.

Several customers indicated by other people would roll over without any previous warning sign, even if you're pressing hard on the brake pedal.

Unfortunately, the automaker did not discuss any problems related to the 2018 Jeep Renegade braking system, and the problem was not addressed at all.

Customer complaints #1

“The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Renegade. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard several times when the brake pedal was depressed. There was no warning indicator illuminated. While on an incline, the vehicle rolled in reverse while the brake pedal was applied. The contact was concerned that the failure could result in a crash. In addition, the vent control function failed to operate properly to emit warm air.”

Customer complaints #2

“red parking brake light and yellow brake light comes on with some loud annoying beeps as your driving. The attached photo is after i pulled over to take a picture and the other lights had went off. The first incident occurt less than a month after i purchased it. When i contacted the dealer i was told to “not worry about it, it was just an oddity”. It has since happened a few other times. When taking it back to the dealer i’m told they can’t replicate the issue, there’s no codes, reports or recalls. The other photo is same situation but as you see one happened at -4 and the other instance was at 81. Loud engine noise. Fuel pump at gas station kicks of every few seconds no matter how long you wait to insert the nozzle or what angle its at. Was told by dealer all issues are because of temperature. All issues have occurred in temperatures ranging from -3 to 81 degrees. So apparently jeep’s sweet spot is well…i don’t know…somewhere that doesn’t exist. Car has 10,000 miles on it. I have filed a claim with mopar warranty. I am scared to drive my new car. It has all come complete with a car payment and bonus trips to the dealer..”

  • 2018 Jeep Renegade steering system problem: power steering failure!

The last problem we'd like to highlight here has to do with the 2018 Jeep Renegade steering problems.

Surprisingly, most steering system problems occur at relatively newer vehicles of only 1000 miles. Customers indicated that their vehicle would not steer, and the steering system would fail without any previous warning signs.

Dealing with the steering system problems can be very risky and need tons of customers nervous about driving there at 2018 Jeep Renegade again. It can affect your safety and might cause some risk of crashes as well.

 Customer complaints #1

The vehicle was traveling straight at approximately 45mph on a local road in Pensacola, FL. The power steering locked the steering wheel in place and it was very, very hard to move. The hill assist needs service light appeared along with the traction control light. The vehicle was very difficult to turn and came to a stop near the shoulder after pulling hard the wheel. Turned off the car then restarted. No warning lights and drove as normal to my house.”

Customer complaints #2

“the vehicle was traveling straight at approximately 55 mph on state route 31 in lakeport, ny. The power steering locked the steering wheel in place and it was immoveable. The hill assist needs service light appeared along with the traction control light. The vehicle was unable to turn and came to a stop near the shoulder after several attempts to pull the wheel.”

Are there any recalls on the 2018 Jeep Renegade?

Despite the high number of reported complaints about the 2018 problems, the automaker did not release many recalls. The automaker only issued two recalls, one focusing on engine stalling and the other one is also focusing on engine stalling that has to do with fuel pressure.

  • 2018 Jeep Renegade recalls: engine stalling #1

On October 2, 2018, the automaker decided to recall about 12,779 vehicles from a long list of affected models due to the engine's problem.

The automaker indicated that there might be an issue in the voltage regulator chip that is in the powertrain control module. This faulty chip might cause the engine to stall or not even start. All affected vehicles were asked to visit the nearest dealership to get the powertrain control module inspected and fixed free of charge.

  • 2018 Jeep Renegade recalls: engine stalling #2

On April 26, 2019, the automaker also decided to equal 21,104 vehicles from the 2017 and 2018 Jeep Renegade model years. The problem was focused on issues in the fuel system and gasoline delivery.

The automaker indicated that some vehicles might experience an issue in their engine, especially in high temperatures. The vehicle might stall because of a problem with the fuel pressure coming from the fuel pump. All affected vehicles were asked to visit the nearest dealership to get the fuel pump inspected and replaced free of charge.

Unfortunately, there were tons of other reported mechanical problems of all the 2018 Jeep Renegade. The automaker decided not to release any recalls or discuss service bulletins focusing on these problems. Customers are disappointed with not hearing anything from the automaker.

Is the 2018 Jeep Renegade reliable?

According to the J.D. Power dependability study, unfortunately, between 18 Jeep Renegades scored 2.5 out of five on the reliability ranking. In general, this vehicle is not considered reliable as compared to other vehicles in the same class.

The insurance Institute for Hwy safety indicated that the 2018 Jeep Renegade received a good score in three areas out of five in their crash testing.

Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety administration allowed the front-wheel-drive Renegades to receive an overall score of four out of five. On the other hand, the four-wheel-drive runagate did not score the same, and it got only three stars in the rollover evaluation.

When you are looking at the 2018 Jeep Renegade reliability, you shouldn't only rely on the mentioned scoring criteria because there are not enough data to judge this vehicle's overall performance. Although what was already reported indicates that the 2018 Jeep Renegade has significant troubles that might not be worth the reliable tracking it received.

Therefore, the best recommendation for you is to go through customer's feedback and understand their complaints and what they went through. Some of these complaints might provide you some hints about how the vehicle performed in certain environments. For example, some reported complaints might be associated with only cold environments, while it might not be an issue in warmer environments. This applies to any vehicle you are shopping for; even it's not related to the 2018 Jeep Renegade.

Lastly, if you plan to purchase a used 2018 Jeep Renegade, you need to bring in your professional mechanic because he will have a better experience detecting any major problems in the vehicle.

Unfortunately, tons of customers think that bringing a mechanic can be a little expensive. However, imagine how much it will cost you to deal with major problems immediately after purchasing the beloved 2018 Jeep Renegade!

Is it worth fixing my 2018 Jeep Renegade?

Answering this question depends heavily on your own circumstances. Before spending a penny fixing your vehicle, you need to evaluate the situation and compare total repair costs to your vehicle’s overall value.

If you realized that repair costs are piling up and getting close to 75% or more from your vehicle’s value, it’s never worth repairing it.

Also, if repair costs won’t add much to your vehicle’s value, you also don’t want to waste your time, efffort, and money.

The bottom line

The 2018 Jeep Renegade came with an amazing off-riding experience along with a stylish design. However, after tons of customers purchased this vehicle, they determined immediately that it has significant problems that might affect the driver's safety.

Many customers indicated dealing with major problems related to The engine, the brakes, and other major components.
